Digital Rights Management - protection or hindrance?

Part 1 of 2

By Mary Yurkovic | November 09, 2012

With improvements in streaming media and compression technology, digital music, images, videos, books and games can be distributed instantaneously across the Internet to end-users. Many digital service providers and individual creators of content are monetizing their content by having it in digital formats (of course) and selling it online. However, without protection and management of digital rights, digital content can be easily copied, altered, and distributed to a large number of recipients, which could cause a huge revenue loss to media companies and individuals alike. For example, Sony (the world's second-largest consumer electronics maker) has blamed digital piracy for eroding profit at its music business, which in 2011 posted a loss of approximately 10.3 billion yen ($160 million). Getting Real: The True Hidden Costs of a DAM

Part 1 of 2

By DAM News Staff | September 04, 2012

Most companies wishing to select or bring a DAM system to support their organization need to justify the venture to the CFO. A common question that I am frequently asked is: "I want a DAM. How much do you think it is going to cost?" This is completely a loaded question and obviously there are many variables. Some costs are quite obvious: software, hardware, training, maintenance, etc. Having been around the DAM space for over 10 years, here are my insights into the areas of cost commonly overlooked or hidden. While considering these hidden costs, keep in mind that sometimes what you are trying to achieve in a DAM Solution does not have to be so difficult. Read More

Is Your Digital Asset Management System Open for Business?

By Mary Yurkovic | July 31, 2012

If your DAM is indeed open for business, are you sure it is being utilized? Whose responsibility is it to ensure it is being used? While trying to answer these philosophical questions, an organization could be losing time and money. One of the secrets to ensuring that your DAM is a success is to be sure it is being utilized by end-users who do not view their DAM as a "technology root canal" but rather as an effective and efficient tool for everyday work in managing media. Big Data - What’s the Big Deal?

Part 1 of 2

By Mary Yurkovic | July 24, 2012

BIG DATA is more than just the fancy new buzzword, though the term has been around for a very long time. As a matter of fact, it's been used in many different ways recently, creating a lot of confusion. Traditionally reserved for analytics applications, it now extends into other areas of extreme content growth. It can come in the form of "human information" - meaning person-to-person communication like emails, videos, phone calls, voicemails and social media updates, as well as extreme data sets filled with information generated through sensors, tags, GPS signals, etc. Big data presents some very real organizational barriers - but also some good opportunities.
